At Medical Center Orthotics & Prosthetics (MCOP), we believe that every detail matters in prosthetic care. Sarai, a new patient at our Silver Spring clinic, recently visited us for a partial finger prosthetic after an amputation. Our goal was to restore both function and confidence by creating a prosthetic that blends seamlessly with her natural hand.
To achieve the best possible result, we partnered with Alternative Prosthetic Services (APS), a specialized provider in Bridgeport, Connecticut. APS excels in advanced anatomical restoration manufacturing techniques, allowing us to provide a prosthetic that looks natural and lifelike.
The first step involves taking detailed impressions of the affected and surrounding areas to capture the precise dimensions and anatomical structure of the missing digit. This ensures that the prosthetic will provide a comfortable and natural fit. Once the impressions are complete, a mold is created and used to sculpt the prosthetic with precision. This mold serves as the foundation for casting a high-strength, translucent silicone rubber skin, which mimics the natural texture and flexibility of human skin.
After the silicone skin is formed, the critical process of color matching begins. Technicians carefully analyze and replicate the patient’s natural skin tones, considering variations from both the dorsal (top) and palmar (bottom) sides of the hand. APS’s expertise in pigmentation ensures a lifelike result that seamlessly integrates with the patient’s existing fingers.
Additionally, fingernails are sculpted and tinted to match the natural appearance of the surrounding nails. Once the coloring and detailing are complete, the prosthetic is sent to the lab for final assembly. The completed prosthetic is then carefully fitted and adjusted to ensure functionality, comfort, and a natural aesthetic appearance.
At MCOP, we strive to do more than replace what was lost. We aim to restore independence, comfort, and self-confidence. By combining cutting-edge technology with expert craftsmanship, we help patients like Sarai feel whole again.
We’re proud to be part of her journey and look forward to helping more patients with custom prosthetic solutions.
